Cheap diamond painting kits that aren't junk

Budget kits are where most people start, and plenty of them are fine. These ten have the sales and ratings to prove it, and we show what to watch for in the bargain bin.

How we pick · Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

Cheap diamond painting kits aren't a gamble when you buy the ones thousands of people already have. The Dream Forest kit sold about 6,000 last month with 4.7 stars, and the Sea of Flowers kit ranked #11 in all of Amazon's Diamond Painting Kits on October 3. Pair a budget kit with a decent pen and a roller and you've fixed most of what makes cheap kits frustrating.

How we picked these kits

We pulled Amazon's lowest-priced diamond painting kits on October 3, 2026 and sorted by "bought in past month". Then we cut anything under 4.5 stars or with fewer than about 450 ratings, unless it had a clear reason to stay. We don't quote prices on this page because they change daily, and the buttons show the current one. Every pick sat at the low end of page-one prices when we looked.

Specs come from each seller's listing. Several budget sellers list many designs under one product, so a rating count may be shared across designs. Where a listing doesn't give the canvas size or drill shape, we say "check listing".

This is a "How we pick" guide. We compared listings and sales records; we didn't paint every kit. How we research.

What cheap kits skimp on (and the fixes)

The picture and the drills in a budget kit are often close to what you'd get for more. The savings come from four places:

Where it's cheaperWhat you noticeFix
ToolsThin pen, flat tray, small wax squareSwap in a better pen; use a ridged tray
Canvas glueDrills that pop off, dry cornersKeep the film on, press with a roller; see drills not sticking
Drill countsA color running short near the endCount bags on arrival; see missing drills
PackingA folded canvas with creasesFlatten before you start, or buy kits shipped flat

Most budget sellers on this list promise in the listing to send missing drills or a new kit. That promise is worth more than an extra star. Use it. When a budget kit isn't enough, see which diamond painting companies are worth paying more for.

Red flags in a cheap listing

The bargain end of Amazon also has kits that will disappoint. A few signs we used to filter them out, and that you can use on any listing:

  • No canvas size anywhere in the title, bullets or details. You can't plan a frame or a finish date without it.
  • A big "bought last month" badge on a listing with a handful of ratings and a low score. New listings can be fine, but sales without ratings tell you nothing about quality.
  • Time claims that don't add up. Some sellers say a 14-inch kit takes a few hours; at a realistic 350 drills an hour, a full 14-inch round-drill canvas is closer to 40.
  • No mention of extra drills or what happens if some are missing.

A shared rating count isn't a red flag on its own. Many budget sellers list dozens of designs as variations of one product, so the stars describe the seller's kits in general. That's still useful; just don't read it as reviews of the one picture you're buying.

The two upgrades that fix a cheap kit

A metal diamond painting pen and roller beside a thin plastic kit pen
A sturdier pen and a roller do more for a budget kit than paying extra for the kit itself.

Spend a little on these two and keep them for every kit after:

  1. A better pen. The benote metal pen holds wax inside the barrel, so you don't keep dipping, and its metal edge straightens crooked rows. It has 4.5 stars from nearly 3,000 ratings. Our pen guide has more options.
  2. A roller. The sponake roller has a 4.5-inch wheel and presses a whole section of drills into the glue at once, which is the best defense against weak budget adhesive.

If you want one more, a pack of release paper sheets covers the canvas you're not working on, so dust doesn't kill the glue.

Questions people ask

Are cheap diamond painting kits worth it?
Many are. The cheapest kits on Amazon include some of the best sellers in the whole category: two of our picks ranked in the top 15 of Diamond Painting Kits on October 3, 2026. What you give up is mostly in the tools and sometimes the canvas glue, and both are cheap to fix.
What's the difference between cheap and expensive diamond painting kits?
Expensive kits usually mean stronger, more even canvas glue, accurate drill counts with generous extras, better color matching, sturdier tools and a canvas shipped flat or rolled rather than folded. The picture itself and the drills can be very similar. Big-name brands also tend to have better replacement-drill service.
Why is my cheap diamond painting not sticky?
Old stock, heat in shipping, or dust on the glue are the usual causes. Keep the film on until you work an area, and press drills down with a roller. Our guide to drills not sticking walks through each cause and fix.
Where can I get diamond painting kits under $10?
Most single-canvas kits on this page sat at the low end of Amazon's price range when we checked, and the multi-packs work out cheaper per canvas. Prices move daily, so check the current price on each listing.
What should I do if my cheap kit is missing drills?
Contact the seller through Amazon first: most budget sellers on this page say in their listings that they'll send missing drills or a replacement kit. Meanwhile, note the DMC code from the canvas legend so you can borrow from spares.
Do cheap kits use round or square drills?
Nearly all budget kits use round drills, which are cheaper to make and easier to place. Square-drill kits are less common at the low end. Our square vs round guide covers the difference.
