Hobby Lobby and Michaels are the two stores worth a special trip: both stock their own diamond painting kits plus the tools to finish them. Five Below and Target are good for small, cheap kits for kids. Dollar Tree barely carries the hobby. And if you want a particular size, a full drill canvas in square drills, or a design that hasn't sold out, Amazon has more choice than all of them put together.
How we checked
On October 13, 2026 we searched each store's own website for "diamond painting" and "diamond art", read the product names and filters, and noted which items were sold by the store and which by outside sellers. We didn't call stores, and shelves change weekly, especially around the holidays. Treat this as a map of what each chain stocks, then check in store or on the store's site for your location before driving over. We don't list store prices because they change too often to be useful.
This is a "How we pick" guide built from the retailers' own websites. We didn't shop every store in person. How we research.
Every store at a glance

| Five Below | 13 products | None named | Avec, Grafix, Art 101 | Cheap gifts, holiday cards |
| Dollar Tree | 1 diamond painting item | Crafter's Square | None | A bookmark, maybe |

Hobby Lobby
Hobby Lobby's site showed 267 results for "diamond painting" and 307 for "diamond art". The kits on the first page don't carry a brand name: animal and sea designs (a sea turtle, a highland cow, a butterfly, an under-the-sea scene), a Strawberry Shortcake kit, and seasonal ones like a Christmas sticker ornament kit and football coasters for game day. It's a good store for the things you need around a kit. The same search turned up storage folders, trays and boxes, plus sealer and release paper.
Search Hobby Lobby for Diamond Dotz and you get 19 items, including loose Diamond Dotz rhinestones, the Ergo stylus, a freestyle adhesive and iron-on transfers. This is also where the licensed kits are, with Hello Kitty and Peanuts designs alongside Care Bears. A search for Diamond Art Club returned seven items, among them an accessory kit, a pink sparkle putty and Grinch and Stitch kits, two of which were out of stock online. Not every listing names its maker, so read the box in store.
Check in store: Hobby Lobby's website lets you add to cart, but shelf stock varies by location and season. Call ahead if you're after one design.
Michaels
Michaels.com reports over 10,000 results for "diamond painting", which sounds enormous until you open the Retailer filter: it counts 48,569 Marketplace items against 2,827 sold by Michaels itself. That difference matters, because only items sold by Michaels can be picked up in store.
The store's own line is Make Market. On October 13 it included 16x20 inch kits, a 3-panel coastal set, a mystery kit with a magnetic wood frame, a Starry Night kit with a frame, a succulent kit, two tool kits and an 11x17 inch light pad. Michaels also sold Jonathan Adler x Michaels designs (some on clearance) and a Pixmary greyscale create-your-own kit. Its filters are better than any other store's: round (1,092) or square (337) drills, full (737) or partial (550) coverage, and age range.
Diamond Art Club does appear on Michaels.com, 57 results in all, but every one we saw was marked Online Only and shipped by Herrschners or Blick Art Materials. Don't expect to find those on the shelf.
Check in store: product pages show stock at your chosen store (for example "1 in stock" or "6 in stock"), so you can confirm before you go.

Five Below
Five Below's site listed 13 diamond art products. Most are small and seasonal: a framed Christmas diamond painting (11.8 x 15.7 inches), a set of shaped Christmas cards, framed Christmas ornaments, a haunted house kit and framed poster kits. Also on the list were a "Licensed Diamond Art Kit" (the character isn't named on the search page), a Crystal Creations kit, a premium applicator pen, an Avec storage case, a Grafix Trick or Treat tote bag set and an Art 101 Gallery Paint & Sparkle set.
Check in store: the site asks you to select a store for availability, and that's the only way to know what's on your local shelf.
Dollar Tree
Search Dollar Tree's site for diamond art and you get three results, and only one is diamond painting: a Crafter's Square Diamond Painting Bookmark Kit in assorted styles. Online it's sold by the case of 12, and the page notes that availability and selection vary by location. The product page also showed a Crafters Square Gem Canvas Painting Kit under "customers also bought". If you're looking for coasters or pens at Dollar Tree, it's a store-by-store hunt; check in store.
Target
Target returned 791 results, with a clear lean toward kids. Its Mondo Llama brand makes gem art posters, 3D gem art and seasonal kits, and also two adult "Gem by Number" kits (Sunset and Galaxy). Creativity for Kids Big Gem kits, including a keychains-and-stickers set and an axolotl, sit alongside Pearhead and Joyfy kits. Many listings show low local counts like "Only 3 left", so check pickup availability before you go.
Walmart
Walmart.com showed more than 1,000 results for "diamond painting kits". Most of the first page came from third-party brands shipping from their own warehouses, plus some Diamond Dotz kits. It works like a smaller Amazon: filters for full drill and skill level help, and there's an in-store toggle, but most of the range is ship-to-home. Check in store if you need it today.
Amazon
Amazon has the range the stores can't match: far more canvas sizes in both drill shapes, and kits in nearly every theme, with sales figures and thousands of ratings to judge them by. On October 13, 2026, a basic dream forest kit showed about 5,000 bought in the past month, and a sunset cow kit had 4.8 stars from 2,174 ratings. Storage is easier there too: the ARTDOT 60-slot case had over 31,000 ratings.
The trade-off is quality control. Hundreds of sellers mean some kits arrive with dry glue or short counts. Our guides to the best diamond painting brands and beginner kits sort the reliable ones out. For bargains, see cheap kits that are still good.
Which store for what you need
| You want | Go to | Why |

| A licensed character kit | Hobby Lobby (Diamond Dotz), Five Below | Hello Kitty and Peanuts kits seen at Hobby Lobby |
| A 40x50 cm or larger canvas | Amazon or Michaels | Michaels lists 16x20 and 24x36 inch kits; Amazon has every size |
| Square drills specifically | Amazon, or Michaels' filter | Michaels lets you filter by drill shape |

Before you drive over
- Michaels and Target both show stock at a chosen store on the product page. Use it.
- For Five Below, pick your store on the website first; the default view shows shipping stock only.
- At Hobby Lobby or Dollar Tree, call. Their sites don't show shelf counts for these items.
- Look at the box for three things: canvas size, round or square drills, and full or partial coverage. Our square vs round guide explains the difference.
- Holiday kits arrive early and sell through. If you want a Christmas design, buy it in October or November.
Where we'd go
For a first kit with no fuss, Michaels: its own Make Market kits are on the shelf, you can check stock before leaving the house, and the light pad and tool kits are in the same aisle. For everything after that first kit, buy online, where you can pick the size, the drill shape and a seller with thousands of ratings behind them. If the name on the box matters to you, our reviews of Diamond Art Club and Diamond Dotz cover where each sells best.
Store ranges come from each retailer's website on October 13, 2026 and change often; check in store for your location. Amazon figures are from listings checked the same day. How we research · Affiliate disclosure
