The best glue for diamond painting, matched to the problem you're fixing

'Diamond painting glue' can mean four different products. Buy the one that fits your problem: a dead patch of canvas, drills falling off, drills on a plain surface, or a finished piece that needs sealing.

How we pick · Updated · We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links.

For a canvas that's lost its stick, the Diamond Dotz Dotz Stick is the glue to buy: a clear, water-based gel made for diamond painting, with 4.7 stars from more than 1,200 ratings and about 1,000 sold last month. But check what you're actually fixing first. Drills falling off a finished piece, drills going onto a wooden ornament, and a painting that needs protecting each call for a different glue, and the wrong one either won't hold or will dull the sparkle.

How we picked these glues

We searched Amazon for diamond painting glue and adhesive on October 13, 2026, then sorted the results by job. Dry times, sizes and formulas come from each listing. We favored products with big rating counts, but the two purpose-made canvas repair glues are newer and have few ratings, and we've flagged that where it applies.

This is a "How we pick" guide. We haven't tested these glues side by side; the picks rest on listings plus Amazon's sales and rating data. How we research.

Which glue for which problem

Choosing a diamond painting glue Decision chart. Canvas patch won't hold new drills: clean it, then use canvas glue. A few drills fell off a finished piece: use a precision-tip drill glue. Drills going onto wood, glass or plastic: use a clear craft glue. Finished and want it protected: use a sealer. What's the problem? New drills won't stick to a patchcanvas looks dull, dusty or bald A few drills fell off a finished piecethe rest are fine Drills going on wood, glass, plasticornaments, frames, freestyle It's finished and needs protectingcoasters, bookmarks, wall art Clean it, then canvas gluePrecision-tip drill glueClear craft glueSealer (not glue)
Start by cleaning: wax and dust on the canvas cause more "dead glue" than dried adhesive does.

Before you buy anything for a patch that won't hold, read our guide to drills not sticking. Wax rubbed off the pen and dust are the usual culprits, and both clean off. And if the kit is from a brand with an adhesive warranty, such as Diamond Art Club, contact them before adding glue.

How to re-tack a patch

  1. Clean the patch. Dab it with a lint roller or tape to lift dust; scrape off pen wax with a fingernail or a plastic card.
  2. Test the glue on the unpainted border so you know its tack time.
  3. Brush on the thinnest layer you can, on the dead cells only. Thick glue lets drills slide and leaves a haze.
  4. Wait until it's clear and tacky, not wet.
  5. Place drills, then press them down with a roller.
  6. Cover anything you aren't working on with release paper.

Drills on wood or glass need a real craft glue, since there's no adhesive layer to hold them.

When you need sealer, not glue

A finished piece with no bare spots doesn't need glue; it needs sealer if it'll be handled. The Topwey Diamond Painting Glue is sold under both names: it's a water-based coat brushed over finished drills, which the listing says needs at least 2 hours to cure. Our sealer guide compares it with Mod Podge Diamond Top Coat and sprays, and explains how to avoid dulling the sparkle.

Keep the glue from dying in the first place

Most dead patches are preventable. Keep the canvas covered when you're not working, keep pen wax light so it doesn't rub onto the glue, store the canvas flat in a cool room away from sun, and wash your hands before resting them on open glue. If you're short drills rather than stickiness, see our missing drills guide.

Questions people ask

What glue do you use for diamond painting?
It depends on the job. To make a dried-out patch of canvas sticky again, use a clear water-based canvas glue such as Diamond Dotz Dotz Stick. To fix a single loose drill on a finished piece, a precision-tip liquid glue works. To put drills on wood or glass, use a clear craft glue like Aleene's Liquid Fusion. To protect a finished painting, use a sealer.
How do you fix a diamond painting canvas that isn't sticky?
Clean off any wax or dust first, then brush a very thin layer of clear canvas glue on the dead cells only. Wait until it turns clear and tacky (the Picmondoo listing says 30 to 45 minutes), then place drills and roll the area.
Is diamond painting glue the same as sealer?
No. Canvas glue stays tacky so new drills can stick to it. Sealer dries hard over finished drills to lock them in and add shine. Some products are sold as both 'glue' and 'sealer'; read the directions to see whether you apply it before or after the drills.
What is diamond painting glue clay?
It's the pink or colored wax you press the pen tip into so it can pick up drills. Despite the name, it doesn't glue anything to the canvas. See our wax vs putty guide if you're shopping for it.
Can I use a glue stick on diamond painting canvas?
As a stopgap on a tiny bare spot, some painters do. A glue stick dries rather than staying tacky, so you have to place drills while it's wet, and it can leave a dull film. A purpose-made canvas glue is easier to control.
Should I re-glue a canvas that's still under warranty?
Check first. Diamond Art Club, for example, covers adhesive defects under its lifetime warranty and asks you to contact support before applying heat, cleaners or extra adhesive. Adding your own glue first could complicate a claim.
