Diamond art wax vs putty: which should you load your pen with?

Kit wax is cheap and predictable but goes linty and leaves residue. Putty lasts far longer but can be too grabby. Here's how to choose, and how to fix the problems each one causes.

Use wax if you're new, paint in short sessions, or mostly use a single-drill tip: it's cheap, predictable and better rated. Switch to putty if you paint for hours, use wide multi-placer tips, or hate replacing linty wax every few sessions. On Amazon the popular wax packs average 4.7 stars, while the best-selling putties sit at 4.0 to 4.2, mostly because putty can be too sticky. That tells you putty is a preference, not an upgrade everyone needs.

How we compared wax and putty

We pulled the best-selling diamond painting wax and putty listings on Amazon on October 13, 2026, with sales, ratings and the sellers' own descriptions. We read buyer reviews quoted on mirror sites and the PatsyPutty seller's usage notes on Etsy. No editorial comparison of the two ranks on Google, so this is built from listings and buyer feedback.

What's the actual difference?

Wax (also sold as "glue clay" or "wax pads") is the small pink or colored square in every kit. It's firm, a little crumbly, and holds a drill just long enough to place it. Putty is softer and stretchier, closer to poster tack, sold in larger lumps or tins and kneaded back into shape when it gets dirty. Both work the same way: the pen tip picks up a bit, the bit grips the flat back of a drill, and the canvas glue grips harder, so the drill stays when you lift away.

Load less than you think

How much wax or putty to load Two pen tips side by side. On the left, a thin film of wax just inside the tip holds one drill cleanly. On the right, a big blob of wax bulges past the tip, the drill clings to the pen, and wax smears onto the canvas glue. Right Too much Thin film inside the tip; drill releases Drill clings to pen; wax smears the glue
Excess wax or putty on the canvas is a common cause of patches where drills won't stick.
  1. Press the tip straight down into the wax or putty once or twice. Don't scoop.
  2. Check the tip: the material should sit inside the tip, not bulge past it.
  3. If a drill won't let go of the pen, you've loaded too much (or the putty is warm). Wipe the tip and reload lightly.
  4. Reload when drills start dropping off the pen, not before every drill.

Wax smeared on the canvas glue is a dead spot waiting to happen. If you've already got one, our drills not sticking guide explains how to clean it off, and the glue guide covers re-tacking.

Long evening sessions are where putty earns its place; for an hour here and there, wax is fine.

Putty too sticky? Try this

  • Chill it. The PatsyPutty seller advises that cooler, stiffer putty performs better; a few minutes somewhere cool helps.
  • Take less. Press the tip in once, lightly.
  • Keep a wax square for detail work and edges, and use putty only on the multi-placer.

Which to buy

Start with a pack of wax in lidded cases like the SYWHXY refills and change it often. If you're reloading constantly on big backgrounds with a multi-placer, try a tin of ARTDOT putty and keep the wax for details. Questions people ask

Is putty better than wax for diamond painting?
For long sessions and multi-placer tips, often yes: putty lasts much longer and listings like ARTDOT's say it leaves no residue on drills. But putty rates lower than wax on Amazon (about 4.0 to 4.2 stars vs 4.7 for popular wax packs), and the common complaint is that it's too sticky. Beginners should start with wax.
Why is my diamond painting putty too sticky?
Usually it's warm, or you've loaded too much. Chill it for a few minutes, take a smaller dab, and press the tip into it lightly. If drills still cling to the pen, try a firmer putty or go back to wax.
Can I use Blu-Tack or museum putty for diamond painting?
Some painters do, but those putties are made for mounting posters and pictures, not for drills. Test it on spare drills first, and stop if it leaves a film on the drills or the canvas.
How often should I change diamond painting wax?
When the pen stops picking up drills cleanly or the wax looks fluffy with lint. That's every few sessions for most painters. Wax packs are cheap, so swap early rather than late.
Does wax damage AB drills?
We found no evidence that it does in normal use. Putty brands such as ARTDOT specifically claim their putty is safe for AB coatings. If you're worried, wipe any residue off AB drills with a soft dry brush rather than a solvent.
What can I use instead of wax for diamond painting?
Putty, a refillable wax pen that keeps the wax inside the barrel, or a vacuum pen that uses suction and needs no wax at all.
