Crystal Art and diamond painting are the same craft. Crystal Art is the brand name used by Craft Buddy, a UK company, for diamond painting kits: you place coded resin gems on a pre-glued, numbered template with a wax pick-up pen, exactly as you would with any diamond painting kit. What's different is the packaging. Crystal Art's wall canvases come pre-mounted on wooden frames, and much of the range is small formats: 18 x 18 cm cards, sticker albums, notebooks and 3D "Buddies".
How we checked
We read the Crystal Art listings on Amazon on October 13, 2026 (sticker albums, card kits, notebooks, Buddies), plus retailer descriptions of the framed canvases from Event Horizon Hobbies and VBS Hobby and a UK wholesaler's catalog. Craft Buddy's own site, craftbuddy.co.uk, didn't load for us that day, so we couldn't check its shipping or replacement policy and haven't stated one.
This is a "How we pick" guide. We haven't made a Crystal Art kit for this page; everything comes from the brand's listings and retailer copy. How we research.
The "glass crystals" myth
Some pages comparing the two claim crystal art uses glass or flat-backed crystals and diamond painting uses plastic. The brand's own listings say otherwise. The Seahorse card kit listing describes "epoxy resin crystals" that are "5D with 15 facets", and retailer copy for the framed kits lists "bags of resin gems". Mainstream diamond painting drills are resin too (budget kits often advertise 26 facets). So both crafts use faceted resin. Neither is glass.
Crystal Art vs a typical diamond painting kit
| Crystal Art (Craft Buddy) | Typical diamond painting kit | |
|---|---|---|
| The craft | Coded gems on a pre-glued numbered template | Same |
| Gems | Epoxy resin, 15 facets; round plus some special shapes | Resin, round or square, often 26 facets claimed |
| Wall-art format | 30 x 30 cm canvas pre-mounted on a wooden frame | Rolled or folded canvas; you frame or stretch it |
| Coverage | Cards and notebooks are partial ("partial crystal") | Mostly full drill on Amazon |
| Small formats | Card kits, sticker albums, notebooks, 3D Buddies | Coasters, keychains, stickers, bookmarks |
| Tools | Pick-up pen, tray, jelly wax, storage bags; framed kits include 2 pens and 2 trays | Pen, tray, wax; quality varies |
| Licensed designs | Harry Potter, Disney and more in the UK range | Varies; many budget "character" kits aren't licensed |
| US availability | Patchy: Amazon (few ratings), some hobby shops | Everywhere |
The Crystal Art formats, and who each one suits
Framed canvases (30 x 30 cm)
The wall-art kits are the clearest difference. Retailer listings say the template comes "pre-mounted on wooden frames" with a framed size of 30 x 30 cm (about 12 x 12 inches), plus two pick-up pens, two trays, bags of resin gems, jelly wax, zip bags for spares and instructions, for ages 8 and up. You skip framing entirely. The trade-off: a mounted canvas can't be rolled flat for storage between sessions, and 30 x 30 cm is small next to the 40 x 50 cm and larger kits common in diamond painting. If you like the frameless look but have a regular kit, our guide to hanging diamond art without a frame covers stretcher bars.

Card kits (18 x 18 cm)
Craft Buddy launched Crystal Art as card kits, and they're still its signature product. A card kit includes the card with an adhesive template, an envelope, bags of crystals, a pick-up pen, a tray and jelly wax. The Seahorse card kit listing gives the size as 7 x 7 inches with a blank message inside, partial coverage and "approximately 60 to 90 minutes" to finish. It's 5.0 stars, but from only 23 ratings. For more card options from any brand, see our diamond painting Christmas cards guide.
Sticker albums and packs
The best-selling Crystal Art item on Amazon when we checked was the Harry Potter Crystal Art Sticker Album Starter Pack: a 25 x 20 cm album plus tools and Harry Potter sticker designs to gem and collect, rated 4.2 stars from 225 ratings with about 400 bought last month. Refill sticker packs hold three random "surprise" designs each. The blind-pack format is clever for collectors and a bit of a gamble for parents; you can't choose which characters you get. More sticker and keychain ideas are in our diamond art stickers and keychains guide.
Notebooks and Buddies
The Lunar Wolf notebook kit decorates the cover of a 6.9 x 10 inch notebook with 50 lined pages; the listing estimates 2 to 3 hours. Crystal Art Buddies are small 3D figures. The Giraffe Wildlife Buddies kit comes with everything needed, plus an "EduCard" of animal facts with a QR code. These are pocket-money projects for kids rather than wall art.

If you're coming to Crystal Art from diamond painting
- Your usual tools work. A better pen with a multi-placer tip speeds up the larger framed kits; our pen guide lists options.
- Partial-coverage cards leave printed background showing. Don't fill it in; the design expects it.
- Special-shape gems (oblong and the like) don't fit multi-placers. Place them one at a time.
- A light pad helps less with a pre-mounted canvas, because the wooden frame holds the canvas off the pad. A desk lamp angled across the surface works better.
The short answer
If someone asks for "crystal art", they mean diamond painting, probably in Craft Buddy's card, sticker or pre-framed format. Buy Crystal Art for quick, kid-friendly projects or a small piece you can hang without framing. For anything bigger, or if you want lots of choice and easy US returns, buy a regular diamond painting kit; our brand comparison is the place to start.
