Choosing for the person, not just the picture
Match the format to the occasion first. A nativity is a December piece that comes out once a year, so a mid-size canvas makes sense. A cross or verse hangs year-round and is the safer gift if you don't know someone's walls. Portraits are harder than they look: faces show every misplaced drill, so give those to someone with a kit or two behind them.
